Wonders of His Love

We have had three ER visits for our children in the last two weeks. The agony of watching one’s child experience serious health complications is devastating. I would have done anything in those moments to spare my children. In the waiting of those three nights at the ER, I begged, pleaded, and even tried to bargain with God to heal and save my child.

God‘s willingness to let go of his only Son is a marvel to me. I surely wouldn’t give my son or daughter for a world full of sinners. But thankfully, God’s love is better than mine! God’s only Son: born in a filthy barn, raised by imperfect parents, ridiculed by self-righteous people, and put to death by those he came to save. God watched for years as his Son was treated corruptly and suffered immensely.

As we sang along with Joy to the World a couple of days ago, I stopped short at the line, “And wonders of His love.” Sometimes things become so familiar we lose the wonder. If we really grasped the wonders of His love, our joy truly would be full. How often do we stop to really wonder at God’s love for us? As Paul says, it truly is beyond our understanding; no height, depth, or width can contain God’s love. But, the more we consider and dwell upon God‘s love, the more we will experience it; and, the overflow will result in blessings beyond measure.

Maybe God’s love has not come in the form that we have prayed for; but, this does not indicate his love for us is any less.

“He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?” (Romans 8:32).

If God was willing to give up what was most precious to him, why would he hold back anything else? He wouldn’t. Psalm 84:11 tells us confidently that God will not withhold anything good from those who are following him!

When we really stop to think about this love, everything else in our world ought to cease. There’s no comparison of importance when it comes to God‘s love. All our strivings are pointless. Our sufferings dim in comparison. And all other longings are quenched.

God graciously provided care and brought swift healing to my children, for which I am abundantly thankful. But more than that, my heart overflows with gratitude at God’s redeeming and everlasting love available through the birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

God’s love is enough. Let us wonder at his love this Christmastime!
